Banking – Insight Analysis, Sweden2017

The banking sector is only a small part of the Swedish economy but a large consumer of IT, so its impact on the SITS market is substantial.

Sweden has enjoyed a good overall economic development over the last few years. One consequence of this has been a surging housing market, which has driven demand for loans to record levels. The low interest rates have further fueled consumers’ willingness to take out new loans. Directives to the Swedish central bank have clarified it should focus on keeping inflation at the targeted level of 2% rather than assuming responsibility for the overall economy, which has led the bank to continue lowering the interest rates in spite of concerns about a housing bubble. The big winners are the banks – at least until the bubble bursts. Calls for regulations regarding issues such as amortization and cuts in tax relief on interest cost have found it hard to win political backing; nonetheless, a regulation on amortization requirements has now been passed.
