Banking – Inbrief Analysis, Norway 2017

Since the sharp drop in oil prices, which began in mid-2014, there has been subdued demand on the Norwegian petroleum sector, also internationally, a fact explaining the modest growth of the Norwegian economy by only 1.0 % in 2016.

In the banking sector, spill-over effects have been noticed in the form of increases in loan impairment losses in the shipping and oil-related industries. For DnB alone, this meant a rise in losses by 5,154 million NOK, totaling 7,124 million NOK during 2016. SSB, Norway’s center for economic forecasts, believes that the worst effects of falling oil-prices are over and expects higher growth going forward. This would both diminish the risk of impairment losses and help Norwegian banks to grow on the back of a more positive economic development.
